My Background
Wherever you are— whether you’re stuck on the first page or stalled with a completed manuscript that you just can’t sell— I can help because I’ve been there.
My journey as a writer began 20+ years ago, in a community writing workshop where I dared begin telling truths I’d been taught since birth to hide. Thanks to the encouragement of an instructor and my classmates, writing became a natural part of my life.
Mid-career, I published my short nonfiction prolifically, but I still struggled to accomplish my dream of writing and publishing a book. Then, in 2023, I cracked the code when I sold my debut hybrid memoir to a Big Five Publisher at auction in a six-figure deal.
What’s Becoming Writers?
Becoming Writers is a transformational language arts program for writers of all ages, including diverse adult populations and young people from marginalized communities. For years, I ran workshops for underheard populations at various nonprofits across NYC, including Ali Forney Center (LGBTQ homeless youth); Girls Education and Mentoring Services (underage victims of commercial sexual exploitation); Washington Heights CORNER Project (active and recovering drug users); and Red Umbrella Project (current, former and transitioning sex workers).
Today I continue to host a variety of workshops and work individually with writers to help them achieve their creative and professional goals.
I’m obsessed with helping make my students’ dreams come true because I know how hard it is to get there— and I also know that it’s possible. I want my students to experience the fulfillment of seeing their hard work pay off, just like I did.
